Hair and Scalp Treatment

In trichology medical and natural therapies are recommended and used for hair and scalp treatment purposes. Even though trichologists themselves are not able to prescribe prescription medications, we do however keep up to date with what is available for both scalp treatment and hair growth. Patients are given the information that is necessary to take to their doctor or specialist for prescription medication that may be required.

Quite often both natural and medical intervention is available. In this case a decision is made depending on the preference from the patient or the most beneficial in results for the patient.

We will now look at the areas trichology covers and the types of hair and scalp treatments that may be used.
We have divided this up into four areas; hair loss, hair, scalp, and contagious conditions.

HAIR LOSS

Hair loss is divided this up into 5 categories

GENETIC THINNING is something that many people say they must live with and is a natural part of life. Many men and women find that it is not "easy" to have to live with the thinning and it is not "healthy" for them either if it is causing undue stress. The aim of any male and female hair loss treatment is to stop the gene that causes the loss.

Female pattern thinning is easier to treat because of the ability to use female hormones to treat it. Men, even though not as easy, can have quite good success depending on the degree of thinning present.

With both male and female genetic hair loss there is a range of treatment options. A hair loss treatment comes in many forms; some are lotions, natural supplements, prescription medication or transplants. Depending on the degree of thinning depends on what is used and how much success is possible.

DIFFUSE HAIR LOSS,(Telogen Effluvium), is mostly noticed with women because it is easier to see. That does not mean that men do not suffer this problem because I am sure they do. There are a range of causes for this from stress or diet, to certain types of medications and illnesses. No specific treatment can be mentioned because it varies in the causes of the condition.

ANAGEN EFFLUVIUM and LOOSE ANAGEN SYNDROME The treatments for these conditions can usually be done naturally. The two are similar in the fact the hair falls in the growing stage but the causes are different with both.

ALOPECIA AREATA, ALOPECIA TOTALIS, and ALOPECIA UNIVERSALIS are able to keep under control. With these both medical and natural therapy is possible. Both therapies equal each other in their success of controlling the conditions. Working out the triggers for the condition is important. It is genetically predisposed but triggers aggrevate the condition.

SCARRING ALOPECIAS’ (Scarring Baldness) Scarring alopecia (cicatricial baldness) is something that must be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible because of they destroy the hair follicle. This of course leads to hair loss. The follicles that have already been destroyed in these conditions cannot be saved but the condition needs to be kept under control and prevented from advancing any further. Creams and/or supplements can be used to control the problem. Lupus Erythematosis, Folliculitis Decalvans, Pseudopelade, Scleroderma and Cicatricial baldness from traumatism are all possible to cause scarring.

HAIR PROBLEMS

Hair problems are numerous and not known about until a patient finds the hair is breaking, excessively dry, or chemical process are not performing to the desired satisfaction. Sometimes it is from mechanical or chemical causes, often it may be from a genetically or nutritional condition affecting the hairs structure. Microscopic analysis is the only way to tell if there are any abnormalities with the hair shaft. Some conditions cannot be helped but changes in how the hair is treated can alter the secondary damage that can occur. There are some that may be treated through supplements.

SCALP TREATMENT

Scalp conditions vary in the degree and nature. Scarring conditions have already been mentioned above in hair loss.

Simple dandruff has its’ triggers and varying reasons for occurring. Lifestyle or diet changes may be sufficient in controlling the condition. Severe cases of dandruff need intervention with lotions or shampoos. The scalp treatment depends on the effectiveness at treating the condition.

Psoriasis and other scaling conditions also have different causes. Degrees of severity also change from one patient to the next. Supplements and/or creams are given to get them under control. Different strengths and types of creams are used depending on the condition and required action of the treatment. Prescription creams or lotions may also be required. All creams used in our clinic have no added fragrances and contain only what is required to be in them for treatment purposes. Help is given to try and keep them under control.

TINEA CAPITIS (Ringworm of the scalp), and HEADLICE

These two conditions go under their own heading because they are contagious and diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible is important. After diagnosis of tinea capitis we will send you to your GP for prescription treatment. Head Lice or nits are treated by the families affected and information is given to aid your treatment choice on the basis of effectiveness and budget. Both conditions require a very strict sterilization process of household items that have come in contact with the head or hair. A list is given to ensure families do not miss anything that is needed to be treated.
