Chemical Hair Damage

Chemical hair damage occurs more now than ever as our lifestyles rely on artifical colouring and perming for a change in hair style.

Nothing wrong with that.

Unfortunately things can go wrong.

Damage can occur slowly over a period of time or sudden. The main two causes of hair damage are a hair dye(colours) and a perm. Inexperience and/or misuse can be a cause. Chemicals damage the internal struture of the hair called the cortex. When the structure of the cortex is damaged it weakens and drys the hair and is easily susceptible to breakage. Hairdressers might use the term "jelly like" to describe overly processed, or damaged hair when it is wet.

The hair is extremely fragile and can break if combed.

trichorrhexis nodosa may be caused from chemical damage

Hair shaft problems such as Split ends, knotting and matting of the hair can quite often be seen. Microscopic examination is the best way to determine if it is actually chemical damage.

This area of trichology is a very involved part due to the damage that can result from these processes.Danadruff and breakage are common but, in extreme cases scarring may is possible.
